Dine Visited 33rd Street Wine Bar

It’s been a long time coming, but Dine has finally kicked off our Broward County events. The first stop — 33rd Street Wine Bar in Fort Lauderdale.

Owner, Candace, welcomed guests in with a glass of wine — something to fit everyone’s preferences and a selection of complimentary tapas from the surrounding  restaurants like Lucca’s Italian Restaurant.

Because it had been awhile since we had visited Broward County, we saw many new faces join the group — but all were able to discover new boutique wines, taste gourmet bites and mix & mingle with some new lovers of food and wine in this hidden gem in Fort Lauderdale.

While we were there, we were able to capture some memories of this fantastic night out. Take a look at some of our photos from the event.

The Lifestyle Center at Whole Foods Reopens with a Series of Cooking Classes

Who doesn’t love a grand opening? or a grand re-opening? or ‘welcome, we’re open for season now’ party. Whatever the case, when a business reopens its doors, excitement fills the room. So I was just as happy to hear about the events to go along with the reopening of the Lifestyle Center at Whole Foods Market in Fort Lauderdale, as I was to confirm the truth in the rumors I’d heard that Chef Mark Militello was now at Trina Restaurant in Fort Lauderale.

The Lifestyle Center had been closed for remodeling for nearly 7 months and come next week, July 5, it will reopen for a series of cooking classes with Whole Foods employees and some of the area’s top chefs. These classes include learning healthy alternatives to favorite dishes, Cuban classics, Raw Flavors of the Mediterranean, Baking Fundamentals and more. The classes range in price from $10-$25 and occur at various times so you can be assured that something will fit in your schedule.

While all of the classes are exciting, we really tend to get excited when local chefs come in to teach the classes. So if you follow your favorite chefs as closely as we do, you are going to love these upcoming classes. Here are the details:

7/29: Join Chef Carlos Fernandez from Hi-Life Cafe for Lunch Club from noon-1pm. Cost is $10.

7/29: Join Chef Mark Militello from Trina Restaurant for an intimate cooking class from 6:30-8:00 pm. Cost is $25.

7/30: Whole Foods welcomes Chef Jeremy Ford from 3030 Ocean in for the Lunch Club from noon-1pm. Cost is $10.

7/30: Chef Chris Miracolo from Himmarshee Bar & Grille will be visiting Whole Foods for a cooking class in the Lifestyle Center from 6:30-8:00 pm. Cost is 25.

Pre-registration is required for all classes, including free classes, and can be made online by clicking the link above, by phone at 954.565-5655 or in store at the Customer Service Desk. (See complete schedule)

Riverwalk Trust’s First Annual Burger Battle – An Omnivore’s Real Dilemma

By Jennifer Leslie Kramer

On Friday, June 4th, the clouds parted and the skies cleared from what could only be categorized as a freak unnamed storm that left parts of South Florida sitting under six to eight inches of water. And it wasn’t a moment too soon. People were lined up around the block waiting to have their names checked and bracelets affixed for the First Annual Burger Battle, which took place smack dab in the middle of Las Olas Boulevard on the lawn of the Riverside Hotel. The event, hosted by Riverwalk and presented by Publix Apron’s Cooking School, brought out some of the biggest chefs from around town to showcase their best burgers.

Council Oak

And what a show it was! Culinary creations ran the gamut from your basic burger, expertly seasoned and grilled to pink perfection, to the more extra extravagant variety, such as the one served by Council Oak Steaks & Seafood at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino: a Prime 28-day dry-aged Ground Sirloin Topped with a Georgia Sweet Grass Dairy Tome Cheese, Portobella-Tomato Marmalade and Parmesan Truffle Fries. As if that wasn’t enough, the burger – if you could even call it that – was accompanied with a Foie Gras Dijonaise, all nestled within a homemade Porcini Kaiser roll. The Foie Gras Dijonnaise and Portabella-Tomato Marmalade is what made this burger stand out. What didn’t, however, was a too-big bun. In the end, the bun to meat ratio was out of whack.

In addition to the 16 burger stations, there was also a fry bar, courtesy of Chef Allen’s, which offered two different kinds of French fries and a variety of special sauces. The South Florida celeb toque was even in attendance as one of the judges, along with other notable locals such as Jimmy Cefalo, our former footballer turned wine guru; Keith Sims, former NFL player; Chef John “Jack” Kane, the Program Chair of Culinary Arts at The Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale; and Miami food blogger, Burger Beast. The judges decided Georgie’s Alibi was the Best Burger in Fort Lauderdale and awarded the team a handsome trophy created by Tamarac artist, George Gadson. The Capital Grille Fort Lauderdale took home Fan Favorite.

Pier 66

My favorite, in both taste and presentation was the plate presented by Pelican Landing at Pier Sixty-Six Marina. It was a tasting trio that included a refreshing Jack Daniel’s Cilantro Lemonade (As a side note, JD was one of the sponsors of the event and served an equally delicious Lynchburg Lemonade), Polenta Fries with Chipotle Aioli and a Ground Chuck, Short Rib and Brisket Burger Stuffed with 4-year Aged Cheddar, Topped with Short rib Chili, Tabasco Onions and Tango Lettuce. The combination of meats created a tender, tasty burger with a surprising ooze of gooey cheddar as you reached the middle. The smokey spice from the Tabasco Onions was another great addition, while the polenta fries added a creative and crunchy starch to the plate.

Other notable burgers were Smith & Jones Ribeye Burger, which had a nice steaky flavor and texture, Johnny V’s perfectly grilled Short Rib Burger, and Morton’s classic and juicy cheddar burger.

With roughly 500 people in attendance, the Burger Battle was the place to be last Friday. In fact, tickets sold out a few days before the event and were not even being sold at the door. VIP tables, which included eight seats, and offered an open bar, table service and comfy seating went for $1,000 a pop. Pricey? Maybe, but this was a charity event, after all. Big 105.9’s Doc Reno kept the evening moving along as host and local band, Bounce, rocked all night long with classic covers from Aerosmith and Billy Joel. And just in case you didn’t get your fill of burgers, there was also a slider eating contest sponsored by Krystal. Though the humidity easily reached 100% and grill smoke hung thick in the air, South Floridians were happily chowing down, and already planning their return trip next year.
